Stretching is a great activity but must be done with caution. So here are some simple guidelines to follow:
1. It is a good idea to stretch every day. However, we all have busy lives so make it a point to stretch at least three times a week. Stretching often will increase your flexibility and if done often enough your body will stay flexible all the time.
2. There is a lot of debate on whether to stretch before or after a workout. While I believe in warming up I think stretching is best left to after your body has warmed up. Imagine trying to mould chocolate after it's been frozen, or after it's been heated up.
3. Never stretch until it hurts. While you can push yourself, if it hurts you are doing damage to yourself. It may take quite a bit of time before you are able to get to your stretching goal. But with all good things, don't rush it or it will set you back even further.
4. One of the most common mistakes people make when stretching is forgetting to breathe. You will get a much better stretch if you don't hold your breath. Not to mention, breathing is what gives your muscles oxygen, if you hold your breath you are starving them of it.
5. You should make sure that you stretch all your major muscle groups. If you are in to any type of sports you should give extra attention to the muscles that you use most for them. For example, if you are a cyclist you should give your legs extra stretching attention.
